Gerry O’Leary wins prestigious award

Dublin based photographer, Gerry O’Leary has been awarded a top prize in a UK photography competition. Gerry won the ‘Overseas Industrial and Architectural’ category in the British Professional Photography Awards 2004, which was held recently in the Midlands, England. Gerry took the coveted title after beating off stiff competition, with over 2,500 entries being received from around the world.

Three decades ago, a young and unemployed Ray McManus won £53 on a greyhound from Longford at a dog track in Dublin. The next morning, he used the winnings to buy a new camera. Today's Irish Times reports that the photographic retailing market is about to get a major shake up with the decision by the giant UK multiple trader, Jessops to open a string of shops here after the launch of a flagship outlet in Dublin's Grafton Street.
